Hi Margie,

I think the main way to apply this text is to take our eyes off of ourselves and put them onto Christ. He is our salvation alone and the Spirit is the Means by which we live the Christian life. Our salvation begins and reaches its completion (heaven) by the power of God alone. That means our efforts are only meant to be a response to God's work, not the determiner of our salvation. God saves, God empowers, God finishes His work. We respond to it with simple obedience and trust.
I hope that helps. Sometimes application comes through thinking differently and I think that is what Paul is getting at in this text.
I'd be happy to entertain any other questions you might have!

The Lord bless you and keep you,

Gabe
